Course DescriptionStudents in English IV and English IV Honors will study the development of British literature. This is a survey course which will cover the span of British history from the Anglo-Saxons through the modern era. We will examine the way that literature is a reflection of a people's values and experiences, shaped by the time period in which they live. For this reason, we will examine major historical events and cultural developments, linking them to values and worldviews expressed in literature. We will also examine the way that the values and literature of one time period is often a reaction to the values and literature of preceding time periods. Whole literary movements have been founded just to reject the standards established by predecessors, and we will look for evidence of this.
Students will examine language as it is used to inform, persuade, and express ideas, while investigating the author’s purpose, style, intended audience, and context. Students at this level will also study grammatical conventions as they make choices in their own writing. Independent reading assignments will be assessed through writing, quizzes, projects and seminars. In addition, students will be assessed through major tests which are comprised of various objective formats, including multiple-choice, and written responses, both short answer and essay. Students at this level will also broaden their definition of text to include art, performance, and multimedia genres. Specifically, this class will examine these major ideas:
Throughout the semester we will address and attempt to answer not only these questions but an abundance of other, equally important, issues through speaking, listening, literature, and writing. |
